Bringing the CYBRHEX Forged Wheel to Life

A bold new design language was introduced into the Tesla brand with the introduction of the Cybertruck. We felt it was only appropriate to develop specialized products specifically for this new era of Tesla. In our approach to this iconoclastic vehicle, we needed not only a wheel that looked right with the design visually, but a wheel that could defeat the rigors of carrying heavy loads, towing heavy loads, and will never fold in the roughest terrain on Earth, the Moon or Mars.

That is why teamed up with accomplished hyper car designer, Sasha Selipanov, whose work includes the Lamborghini Huracan, Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Gemera, Koenigsegg CC850 and other iconic automobiles. This collaboration with Sasha encapsulates the spirit and hypercar DNA of the retro-futuristic Tesla Cybertruck.

The origins of the CYBRHEX design go back to the 2007 “Pharaoh”’ concept car by Sasha, long before his storied work with the famous supercar brands that followed. In a late-night friendly conversation, Sasha shared some of his old concept car sketches with UP Co-Founder and CEO, Ben Schaffer. Ben was immediately taken aback by the time defying design and presence of the Pharaoh.

“There’s a shared quality of timelessness with both the Pharaoh concept and the Cybertruck. The 70’s inspired wedge design in both cases represents a visual that would be equally appropriate inserted in scenes from the 1970s, the 2000s, or even a hundred years into the future. This design aesthetic also would be equally appropriate on earth or roaming the surface of other planets. A desire to push the limits of design, and a shared passion for the art of making exciting cars inspired our collaboration to turn the concept into reality.” – Ben Schaffer

In the time that followed, we engineered this timeless wheel design concept that Sasha ideated back in 2007 into a high-performance rugged option machined out of forged 6061-T6 billet aluminum. When viewed in person, the wheel plays a visual trick in that it looks like CGI in real life, a similar and common feeling amongst fans seeing the Cybertruck for the first time in person.

Going from design concept to reality has a long list of steps along the way which we’ve collectively tackled in the form of major engineering and production optimizations to bring such a unique shape to market and make it WORK.

Construction: Produced in aerospace-grade 6061-T6 forged aluminum for maximum weight savings and durability, the Unplugged Performance CYBRHEX wheels are built from the ground up to perform, literally. The final result was the first wheel designed and engineered specifically for the Tesla Cybertruck with toughness and design-DNA appropriate for an adventure-filled CYBR future.

Multiple Wheel Finishes: The CYBRHEX is offered in multiple standard finishes including Satin Black, Satin Titanium, Satin Bronze and Gloss Black. Additionally, the CYBRHEX is available in a near-endless offering of custom finishes.

CYBRHEX SIZING: CYBRHEX forged wheels are offered in 20”, 22” and 24” sizes, all in a 9.5” width. We designed the offset to offer an aggressive off-road fitment that works with the Cybertruck’s dynamic stance. From the factory, when the Cybertruck’s air suspension is set to Entry or Low, the wheels stick out further than when the vehicle is set to a higher ride height like High or Extract. Where the factory wheels sink into the fenders on High ride height, the CYBRHEX’s fitment retains a flush fitment with some added aggressive wheel and tire poke at low heights.

CYBRHEX Cybertruck fitment was also designed to be perfectly paired with UP INVINCIBLE Carbon Fiber Fender Flares to match the lower offset and aggressive fitment of the Mars-ready wheels.
