The Tesla Cybertruck will have a payload capacity of up to 2,500 lbs and a towing capacity of up to 11,000 lbs, a remarkable figure when compared to its competitors and definitely a high-selling point for these vehicles
During the presentation of Cybertruck in 2019, Tesla revealed its performance characteristics and price. However, since then, the world situation has changed due to the pandemic and unstable economy. Production of the pickup truck was delayed, and the team continued to improve the product, adding features and components. Therefore, the final characteristics of Cybertruck remained a mystery. However, as the delivery date for the first pickup trucks approaches, Tesla has revealed some more details about the vehicle.
As it became recently known, the company has begun showing Cybertruck publicly at malls in San Jose and San Diego, California. Visitors to the shopping centers have free access to preview Cybertruck in person. In addition to the truck itself, Tesla posted an informative sign that included some interesting new details.
On the sign spotted at Tesla’s showroom at the Westfield UTC mall in San Diego, the company said its Cybertruck is “Designed to be the world’s toughest truck.” The advertisement said that the vehicle had adaptive air suspension with on-road and off-road drive modes, an ultra-hard stainless-steel exoskeleton, and shatter-resistant glass. However, these impressive attributes were already known to the general public. The news is that Tesla has confirmed the payload and towing capacity of the steel beast, which allows you to compare it with competitors and understand the advantages and disadvantages.
According to the sign, Cybertruck will have a payload capacity of up to 2,500 lbs and a towing capacity of up to 11,000 lbs. The first parameter indicates how much weight it will be able to carry, while the second parameter indicates how much weight it can tow. At the moment, it remains unclear which truck configuration this data refers to, because the manufacturer promised several different versions equipped with varying motor counts. Data released by Tesla during the vehicle’s 2019 unveiling showed a payload capacity of 3,500 lbs and a towing capacity between 7,500 and 14,000 lbs.
The newly disclosed data showed that Cybertruck is very competitive in the electric pickup truck market. For example, the Ford F-150 Lightning has a payload capacity of 2,235 lbs, the Rivian R1T has 1,764 lbs, the Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck has 1,400 lbs, and the GMC Hummer EV Pickup has only 1,300 lbs.
However, Cybertruck also has a strong position compared to pickup trucks with internal combustion engines. As manufacturers strive to make pickups more comfortable, this directly affects their payload capacity. For example, 2023 models, in some cases, have greater payload capabilities than 2024 models. However, the comfortable and well-equipped Cybertruck still occupies a leading position in terms of capability. To this end, the 2024 Ford F-150 has a maximum payload capacity of 2,455 lbs, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2,300 lbs, GMC Sierra 1500 2,240 lbs, and Toyota Tundra 1,950 lbs.
Cybertruck’s towing capacity is also remarkable when compared to EV trucks. For example, Ford F-150 Lightning has a towing capacity of up to 10,000 lbs, Rivian R1T 11,000 lbs, Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck 10,000 lbs, and GMC Hummer EV Pickup 8,500 lbs. Meanwhile, trucks equipped with internal combustion engines have higher towing capacity: 2024 Ford F-150 has 14,000 lbs, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 13,300 lbs, GMC Sierra 1500 13,300 lbs, and Toyota Tundra 12,000 lbs.
