They use a soft initial rate for everyday streets, then transition to a firmer rate as the suspension loads up in corners or over big hits. That solves the tradeoff owners worry about: you get the lower stance and better body control without living with a harsh ride. A single-rate lowering spring can't do both. If you want ride-height adjustability on top of this, coilovers are the next step up.
