Q: Why would a Tesla drive unit need a magnetic filter at all?

Because the drive unit sheds metal as it runs. The dual magnetic media traps those shavings so they can be removed instead of circulating through the unit and accelerating wear. Combined with the finer 5 micron filter, the result is oil that stays cleaner over time. On a high-mileage or hard-driven Model S or Model X, keeping metal debris out of the gears protects motor life.
