A NOTE ON BRAKE FLUID & HIGH-PERFORMANCE DRIVING
Brake fluid plays a vital role in the performance and reliability of every brake system, especially so in high-performance driving. A professional brake bleed with high-performance fluid is a requirement for the functionality of our brake system. We recommend using Motul RBF 660 (our go-to fluid) or Endless RF-650 brake fluid. Brake fluid should be flushed frequently for race cars in particular because over time moisture content builds and moisture inherently decreases the temperature limit of the brake fluid.
Brake fluid and its temperature capabilities of it matter especially due to the high temperatures the heavy and powerful Model S generates. The higher temperatures are seen in the brake system transfer heat to the brake fluid and when the brake fluid boils those bubbles create air in the brake lines. Air in the brake lines from the boiled fluid can create a near-instant loss of the brake pedal. Therefore, using a high temp brake fluid and managing brake heat is a key to safe braking for extreme environments.
Loss of pedal is a different symptom than brake fade and typically a symptom of brake fluids exceeding their temperature range (or alternatively a leak in the system) whereas brake fade is often a byproduct of the brake pads exceeding the operating temperature range. In both cases, managing temperatures in a racing environment and adequate testing is typically found in motorsports drivers and are always strongly encouraged to get the best and most safe result. We flush our brake fluid after each race and we monitor caliper temperatures for these same reasons on our race cars.

Does carbon-ceramic keep the parking brake and stability control working?
Yes. The kit retains OEM functionality for the parking brake and stability control systems, so nothing on the car’s safety side is compromised by the swap. You get the braking and weight benefits of carbon-carbon without warning lights or a dead e-brake. That integration is part of why it is a bolt-on upgrade rather than a race-only conversion.
What makes carbon-ceramic worth it over a big iron rotor kit?
Carbon-carbon friction gives fade-free operation at high temperatures and vastly reduced pad wear, plus the huge unsprung weight saving. An iron big brake kit costs less and stops hard, but iron is heavier and wears pads faster under sustained heat. If you want the lightest, most heat-immune rear setup and pair it with a carbon front kit, the carbon-ceramic rear is the top of the range.
Is this a DIY job or something to leave to a shop?
Between the carbon-ceramic rotors, the 20-inch wheel requirement, and the caliper and harness swap on non-Performance cars, this is a job for a competent brake shop, not a driveway first-timer. A proper brake bleed with high-performance fluid is required for the system to work correctly. We install it at our Hawthorne facility and can sort the non-Performance parts and bleed in one visit.
What brake fluid does this kit require?
A professional brake bleed with high-performance fluid is mandatory for this system to function. We recommend Motul RBF 660, our go-to, or Endless RF-650. Fluid matters because heat transfers into it, and if it boils, the resulting air in the lines can cause a near-instant loss of pedal, which is different from pad fade. Flush it regularly, especially if you track the car.
Should I run this rear kit alone or with a front big brake kit?
It is designed as the complement to the front carbon-ceramic kit, and the page frames it as the perfect pairing with a front BBK and high-performance tires. Running a big rear alone can upset front-to-rear balance. If you want a matched setup, the Iron 6-Piston Front Big Brake Kit is a natural front partner; if you run that iron front, keep its replacement PFC pads in mind as a service item.
Will this rear big brake kit affect my Tesla warranty?
Adding an aftermarket brake kit does not automatically void your Tesla coverage. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act means Tesla must show the kit caused a specific failure to deny that claim, rather than pointing at the upgrade itself. Because it keeps OEM parking-brake and stability-control function and retains your factory parts for reversal, it is designed to coexist cleanly with the rest of the car.
What size are the rotors in this rear carbon ceramic kit?
This kit jumps the rear from the small 13-inch stock rotor to a 15-inch carbon-ceramic rotor. The larger effective radius multiplies the torque the brake can apply to slow the car, and the floating disc design adds thermal capacity. How much unsprung weight does this actually save?
The 15-inch carbon rotor is 9.5% lighter than the stock one-piece rear rotor, dropping almost 3 lbs of unsprung weight per corner including all hardware, at roughly 2.7 lbs saved. Unsprung weight is what the suspension has to control, so cutting it sharpens ride response and reduces the mass the dampers fight. On a heavy EV, you feel that reduction rather than only reading it on a spec sheet.
Will this rear kit fit under my current wheels?
You need 20-inch or larger wheels to clear these rotors. That is a hard requirement, not a suggestion, because the 15-inch carbon disc is physically large. If you run 18s or 19s, they will not fit over this kit. Before ordering, confirm your wheel diameter, and if you want tire options that suit a 20-inch setup, our team can point you to the right fitments.
Does this fit a non-Performance Model 3 or Model Y?
It fits the Model 3 (2017-2023 pre-refresh), Model 3 (late 2023 refresh), and Model Y, but non-Performance variants need extra factory parts. Model 3 SR/MR/LR and Model Y RWD and LR require an upgrade to the performance caliper, and the page offers the needed Tesla parts, LR and RR calipers plus wire harnesses, as an add-on. Performance cars already have what they need.
Will upgrading my brakes void the Tesla warranty?
Tesla’s warranty covers factory-installed parts, but it does not automatically void your warranty if you install aftermarket components like Unplugged Performance brake kits. Under U.S. law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act), Tesla must prove that an aftermarket part caused a failure in order to deny warranty coverage. This warranty is valid for 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first, excluding consumable products like brake pads, rotors, and tires, starting from the installation date. Coverage extends to labor for warranty repairs when performed by Unplugged Performance or an authorized installer. It does not cover damage resulting from misuse, accidents, off‑road use, improper installation not done by us, or modifications that aren’t factory-approved.
