Q: What does the knurled barrel do on a drag or track launch?
The knurled barrel bites into the tire bead so the tire can’t rotate on the wheel under extreme torque. A Plaid launching on slicks can slip a tire on a smooth barrel, which instantly unbalances the wheel and can break a bead seal. On a car built to set lap records, that grip is not optional. It keeps the tire and wheel acting as one unit.
