Your All-Seasons Are Lying to You

If you have ever pulled away from a stoplight in December and felt your Tesla struggle for grip before traction control stepped in and saved you from yourself, this one is for you.

Here is what is actually happening. All-season tires are a compromise, and that compromise falls apart around 45°F/7°C. Below that, the rubber compound stiffens, the tread blocks stop conforming to the road surface, and the contact patch you paid for quietly stops doing its job. It does not matter how much grip that tire had in July. Cold rubber is hard rubber, and hard rubber does not grip.

Now add the things that make a Tesla a Tesla. Instant torque, with no clutch or torque converter to soften the hit. A battery pack that puts you several hundred pounds up on a comparable gas car, which is more mass to stop. Regen that sends deceleration through the driven axle whether you asked for it or not. On cold pavement, all three work against you.

Then there is range. Winter already costs you. You should not be paying twice.
That is the case for a dedicated winter setup: not just winter tires, but a second set of wheels that lives on them.

Why we point people at the UP-RW FF

Tesla Model 3 18-Inch UP-RW Road Warrior Wheel and Winter Tire Package Unplugged Performance

The UP-RW FF runs a 19×8.5 +30 square fitment on all four corners, across Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y. That one spec does more work than it looks like.

Square means you can rotate. If you drive a Model S, a Model X, or a Model Y or Model 3 in a Performance trim, your factory setup is staggered (wider at the rear). Those rear tires wear out while the fronts still have tread, so you buy in pairs, forever. However, on a square setup you rotate all four, wear evens out, and you replace a set when it is genuinely worn out. Over a few winters that is more money being saved and others might even say, money for other upgrades you have on your wishlist!

Then there is the integrated aero disc on the UP-RW FF wheels. It is structurally part of the wheel, not a clip-on cover, and CFD testing puts the UP-RW FF within 0.010 Cd of Tesla’s most efficient factory aero wheel. In a season where the cold is already eating your range, not handing over another chunk of it to your wheels matters more than it does in June.

The rest of the sheet: 27.64 lbs, a 950kg-plus load rating, a lifetime structural warranty, and an optional replaceable curb guard ring (which is a lot more useful than it sounds in a season when the curbs are hidden under snowbanks). Winter packages start at $3,129.

If you would rather have forged

UP-03 and UP-05 are the forged options, and forged is lighter. Same winter tire selection, same mounted-and-balanced delivery, starting at $4,849. Cybertruck owners can spec all-terrains instead.

We are not going to pretend this is the only way to survive a winter. Plenty of Teslas reach spring on all-seasons and a careful right foot. But careful is not the same as capable, and there is a real difference between a car you are managing and a car you are driving. If you would rather have the second one, UP-RW FF is in stock and ships mounted and balanced. If not, at least go check your tread depth before it gets cold.
