The PD wheel is built a half-inch narrower than the tire it carries, so the sidewall bulges out past the rim and meets the curb first. That single design choice takes the most common source of Model Y wheel damage, parking scrapes, and turns it into a non-event most of the time. Officers cannot baby their wheels, so the design had to tolerate real-world contact. Daily drivers get the same protection.
