Why would a Model X Plaid need a big brake kit if the factory brakes already stop it?
Because the factory system is sized for cost and comfort, not for hauling a 5,500-plus-pound SUV down from triple-digit speeds repeatedly. The Plaid makes over 1,000 horsepower and accelerates like a supercar, so under sustained hard use the stock brakes fade and the pedal softens. This kit closes that gap up front; balance it with the Superlight rear carbon ceramic kit for a matched setup.
How much bigger is the braking surface with the 15.5-inch rotor?
The 15.5-inch carbon ceramic rotor delivers 93 percent more pad-to-rotor contact area than stock, jumping from 77.5 cm² to 149.4 cm². More swept area means more friction working during every stop, which translates into shorter braking distances and much higher heat tolerance. It is a large step, not a marginal one.
How much unsprung weight does this kit save on the front axle?
Over 25 pounds compared to the factory front brake system. Carbon ceramic construction is what makes that possible, and shedding that rotating and unsprung mass sharpens steering response and reduces the effort it takes to change direction. You feel it every time you turn in, not only when you brake.
Do the 6-piston calipers come in different colors?
Yes. The 6-piston monoblock calipers are available in red, gloss black, or a custom color of your choice. The performance is identical across colors, so it is purely a look: red for contrast behind the wheels, black for a stealthier factory-integrated appearance. Monoblock means the caliper is machined from a single piece for more rigidity and a firmer pedal.
Will this big brake kit clear my wheels?
It fits factory 19-inch wheels and larger, including 21-inch Arachnid wheels. It also clears every Unplugged Performance wheel and most aftermarket 19-inch-plus options. If you run our forged wheels, clearance is already accounted for. For an unusual aftermarket wheel, confirm caliper clearance before ordering.
Does this kit fit both the Model X and the Model X Plaid?
Yes, it is compatible with the 2021+ Tesla Model X and Model X Plaid. Both share the front hub and suspension architecture this kit was engineered around, so the caliper brackets and rotor sizing carry across both trims. It was engineered and race-proven at our facility in Hawthorne, California before it ever shipped.
What exactly comes in the complete BBK?
The full kit includes both 6-piston calipers, both 15.5-inch carbon ceramic rotors with top hats, brake pads, billet caliper adapter brackets, and stainless steel brake lines for front and rear. Because the lines are included, you do not need to buy them separately. You choose your caliper color and pad compound when ordering.
Which pad compound should I pick for the big brake kit?
Every kit ships with your choice of a street-and-track-day compound or a dedicated racing compound. The street compound is quiet and consistent from cold through spirited driving, while the racing compound is built for sustained high-temperature stops where factory pads would already have faded. Replacement pads are sold individually, so you can switch as your driving changes.
How is this different from the Big Sweep front kit that keeps the stock caliper?
The Big Sweep front kit reuses the factory caliper to minimize weight for daily efficiency and canyon use. This BBK adds a 6-piston caliper and a thicker 15.5-inch rotor built for repeated high-speed lapping and sustained heavy braking. Choose the BBK when your Model X sees real track duty; choose Big Sweep for the lightest street-focused setup.
Can Unplugged Performance install the big brake kit, and will it affect my warranty?
Installation is available at our Los Angeles facility or through the authorized installer network, and a big brake kit is best fitted professionally. As for coverage, an aftermarket brake kit does not automatically void your Tesla warranty; under Magnuson-Moss, Tesla must prove the kit caused a specific failure to deny a related claim. Keep your factory brakes so you can revert if needed.
Will upgrading my brakes void the Tesla warranty?
Tesla’s warranty covers factory-installed parts, but it does not automatically void your warranty if you install aftermarket components like Unplugged Performance brake kits. Under U.S. law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act), Tesla must prove that an aftermarket part caused a failure in order to deny warranty coverage. Our parts are engineered to work harmoniously with Tesla OEM Brake systems and can be professionally installed by Unplugged Performance in Hawthorne, CA or by an authorized installer to minimize risk. That said, any damage directly caused by misuse or improper installation may not be covered. We recommend retaining all factory parts so you can revert to stock if needed. Many Tesla owners enjoy peace of mind by using Unplugged Performance products, which are extensively tested and installed by certified professionals. If warranty concerns are top-of-mind, our team can help clarify compatibility and installation best practices to ensure a worry-free experience.
What does the Unplugged Performance product warranty cover?
Unplugged Performance offers a comprehensive warranty on all parts and installations performed by our certified technicians. Warranty coverage applies to defects in materials and workmanship on items including lowering springs, coilovers, big brake kits, brake pads, stainless steel brake lines, shocks, and more. Should any covered part fail under normal use or display premature wear, we will repair or replace it at no additional cost—assuming the component was installed by us or at one of our authorized partners.
This warranty is valid for 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first, excluding consumable products like brake pads, rotors, and tires, starting from the installation date. Coverage extends to labor for warranty repairs when performed by Unplugged Performance or an authorized installer. It does not cover damage resulting from misuse, accidents, off‑road use, improper installation not done by us, or modifications that aren’t factory-approved.
To file a warranty claim, simply contact our service team. We’ll guide you through inspection, shipping (if needed), and repair or replacement logistics. transparencia and top-tier support are what you can expect from Unplugged.
Will installing Unplugged Performance parts void my Tesla warranty?
Installing aftermarket parts does not automatically void your Tesla warranty. Under the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (www.sema.org/sema-enews/2011/01/ftc-validates-right-to-install-aftermarket-parts), a manufacturer cannot void your warranty simply because you installed aftermarket parts. Tesla must prove that the aftermarket part caused the specific failure in question to deny a warranty claim. UP recommends retaining all factory parts to allow reverting to stock if needed.Â
